Youth for circular economy

Discover the 10 selected teams who are enabling youth empowerment and waste management with their innovative and clever solutions as part of the Swiss – Middle East Circular Economy for Youth Initiative (SMECEYI).

This initiative brings together students from universities across the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Occupied Palestinian Territory to develop innovative solutions for waste management and youth empowerment.  On April 8, the Swiss Pavilion in partnership with Swissnex Network hosted the first online pitching session, which welcomed 100 participants. A total of 15 teams of students delivered their two-minute pitch in front of a jury of 3 experts:

All teams benefited from multiple exchanges with Swiss counterparts, students and professors, to develop real-life project ready for implementation and to improve their pitching skills. The projects presented included ideas from reusing plastic crates to designing elegant kindergarten chairs to a complex multidisciplinary waste water treatment research proposal. Following the pitching session, 10 teams were selected for the next stage of the competition.

The 10 selected teams will continue to collaborate with our Swiss partners – experts, students and professors from over 10 universities in Switzerland – in order to improve their solution. The best 5 selected projects will be exhibited at the Swiss Pavilion. Finalists will be invited in networking activities, such as workshops and joint events, at the Swiss Pavilion during Expo 2020 Dubai and a winner will be selected.

Overall, the initiative is connecting over 130 people who want to make a difference for the environment and society under the Expo 2020 Dubai theme “Connecting minds, creating the future”.

Our initiative

The Swiss Pavilion in partnership with the swissnex Network has launched the Swiss – Middle East Circular Economy for Youth Initiative. This initiative aims at developing unique and innovative solutions for a cleaner environment, promoting the circular economy and encouraging youth empowerment.

The goal is also to serve as a framework to enhance bilateral relations between Switzerland and the region in terms of education, research and innovation. This initiative supports the Swiss Pavilion towards developing a network of innovators ahead of Expo 2020. This community will then connect in a stronger way during the Expo, discussing technological and societal advancements to favour the transition towards a more sustainable economy.
