Swiss designers to join Dubai Design Week 2020
From 9 to 14 November 2020, Switzerland will curate a space dedicated to Swiss innovation in Building 7 (plot 10) of the iconic Dubai Design District. The Swiss exhibition will consist of different elements, including an installation which highlights the design of the Swiss Pavilion for Expo 2020 Dubai and ‘BYOM’ (Bring Your Own Mask), a series of 3D-printed works and studies from young Swiss designers that rethinks the hygienic mask. The iconic Swiss brand FREITAG will be presenting the “From Truck Till Bag” production process and philosophy for the first time in the Gulf region.
Dubai Design Week will take place 9-14 November 2020, bringing a revised programme to its main hub at Dubai Design District (d3) with a focus on supporting the creative community, to redefine and re-imagine the way we will live in the near and far future.
More about Dubai Design Week.
A curated space by the Embassy of Switzerland, at Dubai Design Week 2020, will be dedicated to the Swiss creative industries and offer a snapshot of what to expect next year at the Swiss Pavilion in Dubai. With innovation in focus, the exhibit will stage a series of activities and installations around Swiss know-how and excellence in the field design.
Alongside an interactive installation highlighting the design elements of the Swiss Pavilion in Dubai, the exhibition will include a project by the innovation lab HyperAktiv.li titled ‘BYOM (Bring Your Own Mask)’, which gives young Swiss designers a platform to rethink protective masks; an item that now accompanies our daily lives. The BYOM project is brought to you with the support of the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia Cairo. Known for its functional, water-repellent and robust bags made from used truck tarpaulins, upcycling pioneer FREITAG will be presenting the “From Truck Till Bag” production process. Under the company philosophy “we think and act in cycles” the iconic Swiss brand will make its very debut in the Gulf region.
The Embassy of Switzerland has a cultural diplomacy programme that aims to promote Switzerland’s image as an innovative, creative and open country. For this project, it works with the following partners:
Pro Helvetia Cairo – Fostering culture interactions between Arab countries and Switzerland. Pro Helvetia supports Swiss culture in Switzerland and worldwide.
Swiss Pavilion – A space at Expo 2020 Dubai for temporary exhibitions reflecting Switzerland’s position as one of the most innovative and competitive countries in the world.
Hyperaktiv.li – A lab for applied innovation where advanced concepts can be developed and take shape.
FREITAG – Since 1993, the Zurich-based manufacturer has been injecting used truck tarps with new life by transforming them into functional, water-repellent and robust bags and accessories.
