Sustainable urban landscapes – shaped by dedicated people and leading technology
Schindler elevators, escalators, and moving walks, transport more than 1.5 billion of us up and down buildings and across transportation hubs every day. Together with our customers, we help organize cities: by moving people and goods, and by connecting vertical and horizontal transportation systems.
Since our foundation in Central Switzerland in 1874, Schindler products and services have been a key part of the urban environment. Drawing on this legacy, Schindler has been pioneering new technologies for future mobility and supporting a better quality of life in cities. We engineer vertical mobility for our customers, so that cities can continue to move efficiently, comfortably, safely, and sustainably.
We want to help build better cities – and decarbonization and digitization will play a big part in achieving that goal. Digitization provides decarbonization technologies, leading to enhanced transparency, better collaboration, and better informed production and consumption decisions, all thanks to the insights gleaned from data. At our level, it allows us to digitize maintenance and optimize energy consumption. We can help make cities more sustainable with our technology and know-how.
The demographic trends at play make it imperative to create denser, smarter cities. As urban areas continue to grow, they’ll need to offer spaces that are people-centric, inclusive, and green. These cities will need to embrace verticality – to avoid encroaching on the natural ecosystems and farming lands that we need to keep climate change in check and to feed our population. Vertical cities provide obvious energy efficiency benefits: the proximity to services they offer reduces the need to travel, for example.
Building better cities is obviously bigger than us: city planners need to get us involved early in the planning process to integrate verticality and link it to the city’s other connected systems. For cities to be sustainable, mobility needs to be simple, smooth, and convenient.
